Wet market recycling experience for members of Kwai Chung neighbourhood

2023-09-05

Last Monday (28 August) morning, a group of members in the Kwai Chung neighbourhood from Login Club of ELCHK participated in recycling experience trip jointly hosted by Food Commons Foundation and the district partner Women Service Association Food Commons @ NT West (Tsuen Wan, Kwai Fong and Tsing Yi). Some parents brought their children with them. They hoped that the little ones could understand that food was not easy to come by and should cherish it; Some members in the neighbourhood were also very curious about the food collection process and interested to join.

We started by collecting food from stall owners in the wet markets and then organized it back in the centre before giving out to the elderly in need. Led by centre staff and food collectors, both adults and children actively took part in the process. They collected and organized food with food collectors and completed the daily task of the food collector together.

“Look! After removing the brown part of eggplants, it is still edible. This can save food from going to waste.” In the selection process, parents discovered that part of the eggplant was rotten and took the chance to educate children of the next generation about common sense in daily life.

Through physical participation, everybody knew more clearly about food collection and sharing action and hoped to spread this cherishing food and helping people concept to more members in the neighbourhood.
